Death/Fast
Death/Fast (52 minutes, 2017-18)
Brian Karl and Özge Serin, co-directors
Death/Fast is a 52 minute-long experimental documentary about the 2286-day long Death Fast Movement in Turkey, a mass hunger strike undertaken by incarcerated leftist political prisoners in the early 2000s. Using a combination of in-depth ethnographic documentation via focused interviews and a series of imagery taken from everyday street life in Istanbul, along with precise formal digital treatments of both sound and audio, the video attempts to imply the abstract and invisible: both the slow wasting away of the bodies of those undertaking already past hunger strikes, and the motivating political ideologies of both the hunger strikers themselves as well as the ideologies of state-dominated violence and modern capitalism.
